Wimbledon Loft Conversion Costs
While we previously touched upon this subject in our last blog post regarding mansard conversions in Wimbledon, we mentioned that many companies within the area like to raise the prices of loft conversions for home owners because the area itself is affluent. While other companies would not admit this, I have personally seen this happen multiple times and I feel that any good loft conversion company or business in general would make it clear to loyal customers how much they should be paying, rather than how much companies may want to take from you. While it is unfortunate for many residents and home owners within the area to be somewhat taken advantage of because they are regarded as being more affluent, we feel that the best way to help you as a customer is to provide you with a ballpark estimate on what each loft conversion should cost you in Wimbledon.
Cost of a dormer loft conversion in Wimbledon
With dormer loft conversions being the most popular loft conversion in Wimbledon, it would only make sense for this to be the first one we will discuss. Dormer loft conversions are becoming exceedingly popular within Wimbledon because of the difficulty to be accepted for a mansard loft conversion within local authorities. It is also no secret that if you can be efficient and not extend your dormer conversion too far, then planning permission is not necessary for a dormer loft conversion project. A dormer loft conversion within Wimbledon on average should cost £25,000 in our current market, while the price range itself can differ from £20,000 - £35,000 depending on what you need to be completed. This budget is mainly for costing both the labour and raw materials, which are the most expensive part of the dormer loft conversion project. The overall price is also dependent on how much construction is dependent on the project succeeding.

The second most popular loft conversions within the Wimbledon area is a hip to gable loft conversion. Hip to gable loft conversions are also becoming the most popular loft conversion within the Wimbledon area specifically due to it falling under the Permitted Development Act, meaning it is not necessary to apply for planning permission within the area. Since some customers in the past have had difficulties being accepted for their loft conversion designs in the past, they turn to hip to gables instead. The average hip to gable loft conversion in Wimbledon should cost £20,000, while the average price range should be anywhere between £16,000 - £30,000. The higher end costs usually involve a large installation or fixture to be installed along with the loft conversion itself. The price is one again dependent on labour costs and the raw materials necessary.
Wimbledon price of mansard conversion
Finally, mansard conversions are the last possible loft conversion option for home owners in Wimbledon. While we touched upon this in our previous post, the average mansard conversion in Wimbledon costs £35,000 - £40,000, while it can range on average anywhere between £25,000 - £50,000 depending on the size of the mansard conversion. Since the homes in Wimbledon are naturally larger than other homes around London, this is partially responsible for the price. The other main factor is the raw materials cost for the mansard conversion being that much larger than other options. However, if you are looking for the largest amount of potential space and an efficient way to raise the property value within your home, a mansard conversion is an effective way to achieve this. The return of investment will far outweigh the cost to complete the project.
I hope you enjoyed today's post. If you are a home owner within Wimbledon and you are looking for a loft conversion, I would make sure to try and keep these average prices in mind. I would not use them as a suggested price however, since we’ve come to this average based on many projects we have completed in the past. This means the prices varied on multiple factors, including the schematics of the projects themselves. Thank you for reading todays post, and be sure to read the next too!
Wimbledon Mansard Loft Conversion
A mansard loft conversion in Wimbledon can be very tricky to both complete, and get planning permission for. Because of the overall size extension that a mansard loft conversion provides your home, it cannot fall under the ‘Permitted Development Act’ unless you are looking for a small mansard conversion. Especially with the local authority of Wimbledon being relatively fickle about accepting applications for mansard conversions, it would be hard to guarantee that it would be an option for you. However, many mansard loft conversions have been accepted in recent times, and I would not rule it out as a possibility. With the significant increase in size and living space that it would provide both your home and your loft conversion, mansard conversions are becoming increasingly popular for those in and around Wimbledon, and the city of London itself.
Cost of a mansard loft conversion in Wimbledon?
Within the area of Wimbledon, mansard loft conversions are often the most expensive loft conversion option, while providing the most Return of Investment (ROI). The average mansard conversion in Wimbledon costs £35,000 - £40,000, while it can range realistically anywhere between £25,000 - £50,000 depending on the size of the mansard itself and the amount of manpower and labour hours it would cost to complete it. Unfortunately, there are a few loft conversions and building companies within the vicinity of Wimbledon that intentionally raises the price of loft conversion services due to Wimbledon being a relatively affluent area of London. That is why I cannot stress enough how important it is to get multiple quotes if you live within the area. If you feel that a quote may be too high for your project, then meeting other companies to find out what they could offer you would be a wise move.
A mansard conversion can also take the longest to complete because of the amount of size that is extended. Recently we personally worked on a mansard conversion that took 6 weeks because of a few different factors such as the construction process itself. Anywhere from 5 weeks to 8 weeks would not be unreasonable for the overall timescale of the project to be completed. For large mansard conversions, you would be looking at anywhere between 7 weeks to 10 weeks depending on different requirements or specifics that you may have for your conversion. The length of the project is not necessarily a negative, since you can be assured that the loft itself will be structurally strong. Wimbledon itself also has large houses per square foot, so a mansard conversion would naturally take longer to complete in Wimbledon than most of locations in London.
Other mansard conversion information in Wimbledon
Finally, if you are in the Wimbledon area and you are considering a loft conversion, I would advise you to look at all suitable loft conversions before choosing a mansard, dormer or hip to gable loft. Since they are beneficial to specific property types, you may have your mind set on a dormer when a hip to gable could provide you with the same result, but costing you less time and money. Likewise, you may think that you need a hip to gable loft conversion but realise that the space restrictions are too much for your designs, and a mansard loft conversion is more suitable. These are things that you should go other with the companies that quote you. They have performed loft conversions in the past and if they are knowledgeable, they would be able to guide you the best way.

Wimbledon Loft Conversions
Since we are based in the borough of Merton, we often perform loft conversions in the Merton and surrounding areas. One of those areas is Wimbledon, and as a resident, if you have ever tried to convert your loft then you are aware of how difficult it can be at times. There are many different factors that go into a loft conversion such as boundaries between properties, cost of raw materials, labour and manpower hours and much more. This is more so if you wish to undergo a loft conversion that is of a larger scale, since you would need to apply for planning permission at your local authorities. Unfortunately, these conversions do not get approved 100% of the time due to neighbours’ homes being too close to your property, or other complaints that you may face during a loft conversion. That is why in the Wimbledon area specifically, most customers decide to go for a dormer or hip to gable loft conversion. The overall amount of extension space required is much lower than it would be for a mansard.
Specific information regarding loft conversions in Wimbledon
Hip to gable loft conversions are common for a variety of reasons in Wimbledon. Firstly, the homes themselves are designed so that you can gain a lot of extra living space from the maximisation of available space within the loft itself. Since the average Wimbledon home is unfortunately slanted towards the sides, the loft itself misses out on a lot of space during the conversion. A hip to gable is also much cheaper than the average loft conversion, making it beneficial for those who want to look for a turn of investment further down the line. Finally, with the average hip to gable loft conversion you would not have to apply for planning permission, which is something that stops many Wimbledon home owners from getting their conversion in the first place. These are the average conversion types within the area.
Dormer loft conversions are also quite common, being able to maximise loft space while also extending outwards to add extra space. This is beneficial for many home owners since while they would like to use the space they currently have, they find their designs and plans require extra space that a hip to gable conversion cannot give. This makes dormer loft conversions beneficial over the average mansard conversion. In Wimbledon specifically, you may notice that mansard conversions are not commonly agreed to. You may see a neighbour or two who have had mansard conversions completed on their property, but this is uncommon. The dormer conversion will give you some of that additional space while also being a cost-effective option more likely to be approved within Wimbledon. Because of the flexibility in where you can put the extension itself (it can be placed both on the side or the beck of the home’s roof), this also makes it beneficial with any boundary disputes you may have with neighbours.
Mansard loft conversions in Wimbledon
The last conversion which is the most uncommon because of the inconsistency in which they are approved within Wimbledon are mansard conversions. As I said earlier, it will not be often you will see mansard conversions approved because of boundary disputes. Since homes within Wimbledon can be dense in certain areas and mansard conversions are considered the same as home extensions (both large and intrusive on boundaries of land), it would be a fight to get the planning permission approved at times. Truthfully, it comes down to what the local authority is willing to agree to. Mansard conversions are being approved within Wimbledon however, and if you are in dire need of a mansard rather than a dormer conversion, then I would always suggest applying for the conversion anyway. It wouldn’t hurt to try and at worst you would have to go with a dormer which would be your only option.
Therefore, it is important to note that if you are in Wimbledon, ensure you apply for planning permissions before drawing any designs or plans for your loft conversion.
